Personally, I think part of the issue is that some children are not being watched by their parents on the floor so are constantly hitting the buttons without giving it chance.. Wouldn't be surprised if they're breaking because of that.
To fix this, a sort of "Push when lit" option or like I said before, remove the buttons and have it on timer...
Again, not all children, however I was almost knocked over by a few who were up there running around (And smacking the buttons repeatedly) whilst not supervised when I was up there...
There are signs that say to supervise children but signs are more guidance.

He has no goods behind him and not in his normal area so my guess is no

No, I don't think he does. James has taken over running the goods train on Henry's line with him pulling two troublesome trucks, a flatbed and brake van. Edward now has a troublesome truck and two cattle trucks and he and James both do work.

Thomas is still at the same spot, Maithwaite and Rusty is now on the siding where Thumper is, with Sir Handel now taking over Rusty's little train.
